WordPress Links are a great way of managing external and internal links on your blogs. The link manager is quite powerful; you can add images and other meta data to links. There is a clever way to show small banner ads on most iDesignEco themes by using WordPress Links and Widgets.

Ads on ecoBlog sidebar

Creating banners using WordPress Links

Create a link category for your ads by going to Links -> Link Categories in the WordPress admin menu. The category name can be anything, for example 125px125 Banners.

Add banners by going to Links -> Add New Name: Name of the banner ad
Web Address: The url the banner links to
Categories: Check the category you just created, in our example 125×125 Banners. Make sure no other categories are selected.

Now, scroll down to the box titled Advanced. Enter the url of your banner image there. It can be a remote image, or you can upload your banner using the WordPress Media tool and paste the url to the image there. Banners of size 125×125 fit beautifully on the blog’s sidebar.

Save the link by pressing the Add Link button

This way, add as many banners as you want to the link category.

Displaying the banners on your blog using Widgets

Add the Links Widget to your blog’s sidebar from the WordPress Widgets manager. If you are unsure on how to add Widgets, you can refer to our widgets tutorial.

In the Links widget’s options, choose your banner ad links’ category. In our example, 125×125 Banners. Select the Show Link Image option and de-select all other options. Hit Save and you should now have banner ads on your blog!

Configuring Links Widget

_________________________________________________________

Tip

Don’t forget, you can add multiple blocks of banner ads! Just create another link category and add your new set of banner ads to it following the steps above. In your widgets, besides the Links widget you already added to the sidebar, drag and drop and add a second Links widget. Only in this widget, you choose your new banner ads category.

How to setup widgets?

Widgets are easy to install. The WordPress widget manager can be accessed via the Widgets link under the Appearance menu on the administration page.

Widgets on the WordPress menu

On the Widgets page, all available widgets are shown as small boxes on the left side of the page under Available Widgets and Inactive Widgets and . On the right side, widget areas supported by the the current theme are shown, for example: Right sidebar. To add a widget to a widget area on the theme, simply click the widget on the left side of the page and drag it all the way into the required widget area box the right side. If the widget is configurable, a small options box will appear as soon as the widget is dragged and dropped.

Drag and drop to install widgets

You can add as many widgets as you want to your theme.

To remove a widget, simply click, drag and drop it onto the Available Widgets area on the left side, from the right widget area.
